SNL Star Exiting After 8 Years Before Season 51 Begins

Amid ongoing changes in late-night television, Saturday Night Live (SNL) is preparing for another major shift, with a key cast member leaving. After celebrating a milestone anniversary, producers are restructuring the cast to keep the show fresh. As part of this transition, one of its most recognizable performers, Heidi Gardner, is stepping away after several seasons.

Heidi Gardner is leaving SNL before Season 51

Heidi Gardner joined the NBC sketch show in Season 43 as a featured player and was promoted to the repertory cast in 2019. On August 28, 2025, Variety confirmed her exit, making her the most high-profile departure ahead of the new season, following the exits of Devon Walker, Emil Wakim, and Michael Longfellow.

Gardner previously acknowledged on Craig Ferguson’s Joy podcast that she had been experiencing “sketch fatigue” after years at SNL and The Groundlings. She explained, “At this point, after doing Groundlings and SNL for so long, I’m like, ‘I’ve written a lot of sketches.’” Earlier in 2025, she also hinted at a transition by posting about a retreat with cast and writers in Tarrytown, New York, calling the group her “vibrant family.”

During her eight years on the show, Gardner became known for several recurring characters. These included teen film critic Bailey Gismert and Crystal (Your Co-Worker Who is Extremely Busy Doing Seemingly Nothing). In 2024, she also went viral after breaking character during the Beavis and Butt-Head sketch as NewsNation host Bobbi More.

Her departure comes amid broader cast shifts following the 50th Anniversary Special. Walker, Wakim, and Longfellow mostly played supporting roles. By contrast, Gardner was a central figure and the longest-tenured female cast member before her exit. Creator Lorne Michaels had already signaled that SNL would see major cast changes after the milestone season.

Beyond SNL, Gardner appeared in Shrinking and has been in discussions for other projects, including an NBC pilot. With her exit, SNL loses an eight-season veteran whose recurring characters and versatility were a fixture of the show.

She leaves as Season 51 prepares to move forward with a reshaped ensemble.
