Matthew McConaughey To Reunite With True Detective Creator on Netflix Series

Matthew McConaughey is back on the small screen as Netflix has secured a new series from True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto. The project, which reunites McConaughey with his Dazed and Confused co-star Cole Hauser, has already generated buzz after reports confirmed the actors will play brothers in the Skydance Sports–backed drama.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon and Apple were also in the running, but Netflix ultimately came out on top. Skydance Sports is developing the untitled project, with McConaughey and Hauser set to play brothers.

Industry sources refer to the project as “The Brothers Project,” though its setting and storyline remain undisclosed. Skydance Sports backs the series, hinting at a possible sports angle.

This collaboration marks another reunion for McConaughey and Hauser, who both starred in Richard Linklater’s 1993 film Dazed and Confused, which helped launch their careers. Pizzolatto previously created HBO’s True Detective, where McConaughey starred as Rust Cohle in season one.

HBO, which has reportedly had a strained relationship with Pizzolatto, was absent from the bidding. In 2024, Pizzolatto criticized the network’s handling of True Detective Season 4. Meanwhile, McConaughey had been in talks to headline a Yellowstone spinoff, though Taylor Sheridan instead went on to develop a different project titled The Dutton Ranch with Hauser and Kelly Reilly.

This new deal follows news from June 2025 that McConaughey and Pizzolatto were reuniting for a Mike Hammer feature film backed by Skydance. The movie, written by Pizzolatto, is based on the Mickey Spillane detective novels. Whether the newly announced Netflix series connects to or updates the earlier Skydance project remains unclear.

McConaughey will return to films this fall with The Lost Bus, a Paul Greengrass-directed drama about the Camp Fire, set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5. Pizzolatto will debut his crime drama Easy’s Waltz at TIFF, featuring Vince Vaughn and Al Pacino. Hauser, meanwhile, continues to expand his profile with ongoing success from Yellowstone.
