Pineapple Express 2 Could Still Happen, Says Seth Rogen

Seth Rogen recently reflected on the prospects of a potential Pineapple Express 2 and gave a promising update. Pineapple Express came out in 2008 and was a critical and commercial success. Rogen penned the screenplay for the movie with Evan Goldberg from a story the pair developed with Judd Apatow.

What did Seth Rogen say about Pineapple Express 2?

Seth Rogen spoke about a potential sequel to Pineapple Express during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. When the host relayed a viewer’s question about Pineapple Express 2, Rogen said, “Maybe. We can probably sell it to streaming or something.”

This prompted Cohen to state that there was “a big demand” for the follow-up to the stoner comedy. Rogen responded, “There could be. You never know. I don’t know. I’m not great with sequels. It’s not where my mind goes, but maybe one day” (via Deadline).

Back in 2020, during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Rogen confirmed that while there were plans for a sequel, Sony discarded the project due to budgetary issues. “We tried to make one,” he explained.

“Thanks to the Sony hack, you can actually find the email when Sony decided to kill the movie and not make it. It was something we were very open to several years ago, but Sony was not that interested in it.”

Pineapple Express stars Rogen as a process server and James Franco as his marijuana dealer. They witness a murder and now must flee those responsible. In recent years, Franco has faced accusations of inappropriate or sexually exploitative behavior from multiple women (via NBC News). In 2021, Franco settled a lawsuit filed by two former students of his acting school. He also admitted that he had slept with students during an interview later that year (via NPR).

Although Rogen backed Franco, a longtime friend, at first, he later publicly stated that he would no longer work with Franco (via The Times).
