Jamie Lee Curtis, who reprised her role as Tess Coleman in Freakier Friday, recently explained why the new sequel was “more challenging” to make than the first movie. Freaky Friday, also featuring Lindsay Lohan as Anna Coleman, came out in 2003 and was a massive hit. The original was one of the several adaptations of Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel of the same name.
Jamie Lee Curtis says it was ‘more challenging’ to play Tess in sequel than Freaky Friday
Curtis detailed the challenges of playing Tess in the sequel during a new interview with ComicBook. She noted that it was harder to figure out her character this time around because the space between them was greater.
“Teenagers are really tricky,” the Oscar-winner said. “In Freaky Friday, it’s really easy — adult, teenager. Adults stand up like this, teenagers slump. It was so black-and-white, so clear. In this, it’s a much more subtle shift, and we had to find it with words, and language, and body behavior, and mannerisms and stuff. So, that’s way more challenging because it’s not as easy to think that you’re getting it right,” she further stated.
In Freaky Friday, Tess and Anna, who are mother and daughter, swap bodies and see the world from the other person’s perspective. Things appear to be a bit more complex in the sequel. The trailer and other promotional material indicate Anna swaps bodies with her own daughter, Julia Butters’ Harper Coleman. As for Tess, she swaps bodies with Anna’s soon-to-be stepdaughter, Sophia Hammons’ Lily Davies.
Curtis said that she used Donna Berzatto, her character in The Bear Season 2, as a reference while playing Lily in Tess’ body. “With Donna, I knew I was getting it right because I know her,” she explained. “I don’t know a Lily. I really don’t, so it was harder for me to make sure I was actually getting it right,” she added.
The cast of Freakier Friday also includes Chad Michael Murray as Jake, Mark Harmon as Ryan, and Manny Jacinto as Eric Davies. The movie debuts in U.S. theaters this Friday.
