Apple TV+’s new series, Chief of War, featuring Jason Momoa, is receiving praise from critics in its first reviews and has managed to earn a satisfactory Rotten Tomatoes score. The historical drama, created by Thomas Pa’a Sibbett and Momoa, premiered with two episodes on Friday, August 1, 2025.

Jason Momoa’s recently released historical series, Chief of War, has impressed critics following its two-episode debut. The remaining episodes will come out every Friday till September 19, 2025.
According to Apple TV+, the story revolves around the warrior Ka‘iana, played by Momoa, who “embarks on an epic mission to unite” the four kingdoms of Hawai‘i. Furthermore, Chief of War is based on true events.

Aramide Tinubu of Variety described the series as “stunning, historical and with acute attention to detail.” She further noted, “Chief of War is a majestic and immersive story about rebels, home and allegiance. This series is about the greed of men, a crushing power obsession and the brutality of war.”
Roxana Hadadi of Vulture lauded Momoa’s work in the series and stated, “Momoa is a perfect medium for his particular gifts — that brawn, that smirk, that ability to subvert expectations by moving easily from rage and disgust to tenderness and virtue.”
Adam Davidson of The Wrap wrote that Chief of War is “visually stunning, action-packed and culturally significant.” Additionally, Davidson stated that the series is a “bloody entertaining TV show that boasts incredible performances from its cast.”

Based on a total of seven critic reviews, the Apple TV+ show has earned 86 percent on the Tomatometer. There is no score available on the Popcornmeter currently, as the show just premiered.
