Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore 2 debuts with positive reviews

Happy Gilmore 2, the long-awaited sequel to Adam Sandler’s hit 1996 comedy, is out on Netflix, and many critics seem to agree that the movie is tailor-made for fans of the original.

The movie revolves around the titular Happy Gilmore, who has stepped away from golf following a tragic accident. However, he is pushed to come out of retirement to raise funds to send his daughter to ballet school. Fans get to see Sandler’s classic style of humor, along with multiple cameo performances by numerous golf stars.

In its review of the movie, Variety stated that Happy Gilmore 2 rides on the nostalgia of the first movie. They noted, “Happy Gilmore 2 is a happy orgy of raucously well-executed Adam Sandler fan service. It’s a pointed exercise in nostalgia, but with a present-tense edge. It’s not some fake update of the clever/dumb brand of slob comedy that made Sandler a superstar in the ’90s.”

While speaking about the cameos appearing in Happy Gilmore 2, Indiewire wrote, “The film is packed with cameos of all kinds, and audience mileage will definitely vary, simply based on who they’re not only excited to see, but who they actually recognize.”

The Hollywood Reporter stated in its review that, “Like the first film, the sequel proves moronic, witless and relentlessly vulgar. Which is to say, Happy Gilmore fans will love it.”

AV Club noted that Happy Gilmore is better at “introducing new side characters” into the movie’s world. They added, “Happy Gilmore 2 doesn’t stand on its own enough to rate alongside the company’s best work for the streamer. But the sequel is another indication that Sandler is still undertaking his longtime mission of making silly comfort-food comedies with the stealth seriousness of older age.”

Consequence noted in their review that the movie has “enough freshness to the plot to keep it from feeling like a total rehash of what came before, while still delivering wild golf stunts and a huge range of cameos.”
