Mindhunter executive producer Charlize Theron recently addressed the series’ possible return and the potential for three Mindhunter sequel films. In a recent interview, she discussed David Fincher’s creative control over the series. She also talked about the potential trilogy and what’s needed for the series to return.
Charlize Theron reveals how Mindhunter sequels could happen
Charlize Theron confirmed that any continuation of Mindhunter rests entirely in the hands of David Fincher. “It’s up to him, and if he wraps his head around it, then it will happen,” she told The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview. “I know that he loves this world just as much as I do, but he only does things when he really feels like there’s potential in it,” she added.
Charlize Theron executive-produced the Netflix crime drama Mindhunter, which aired for two seasons between 2017 and 2019. In 2020, Netflix placed the series on indefinite hold after Fincher cited high production costs relative to its audience size. The platform released the cast from their contracts, and Fincher shifted his focus to other projects, including Mank and The Killer.
In June 2025, Mindhunter revival rumors gained traction after actor Holt McCallany told CBR that Fincher discussed a potential return in the form of three two-hour Netflix movies, with writers currently developing scripts pending Fincher’s approval. However, Fincher has not confirmed or denied the report, and Netflix has yet to issue any official statement.
When asked if fans should maintain hope, Theron reiterated the creative control Fincher holds by saying, “If he wants to do it, he’ll do it.” Fincher himself previously said that he was proud of the show but unsure whether he’d return to it.
Meanwhile, Theron remains active in producing and featuring in Netflix projects. Her film The Old Guard 2 debuted on July 2, 2025, and she recently wrapped production on another Netflix action film titled Apex. She will also feature in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, reportedly in the role of Circe.
As of now, the future of Mindhunter remains undecided and contingent on Fincher’s interest in continuing the story.
