A new insider report suggests that Wicked 3 may be in early talks at Universal Pictures. With Wicked: For Good expected to wrap up the main storyline in 2025, the update suggests the franchise might not end there. Details remain limited, but discussions appear to be underway.
Wicked: For Good may not be the last sequel in franchise
According to insider MyTimeToShineHello, “Even though Wicked: For Good covers the rest of the musical, there are talks about a possible third movie.” Universal Pictures will release Wicked: For Good on November 21, 2025. The film concludes the adaptation of the original 2003 Broadway production.
Jon M. Chu’s adaptation has closely followed the musical’s structure, but there is source material beyond the stage version. Gregory Maguire’s The Wicked Years series includes four books.
It begins with Wicked, which inspired both the Broadway musical and Jon M. Chu’s films. The sequels, Son of a Witch, A Lion Among Men, and Out of Oz, explore events after The Wizard of Oz and follow new characters, including Elphaba’s son, Liir.
Unlike the Broadway show, Maguire’s novels follow a darker, more complex narrative, with Son of a Witch centered on Liir’s journey to discover the truth about his lineage. Nor, the daughter of Fiyero and Liir’s half-sister, also plays a prominent role. These sequels diverge significantly from the musical’s tone and structure, making adaptation a challenge for continuity.
Chu’s films so far follow the Broadway storyline, including the implication that Elphaba survives. Transitioning to Maguire’s sequel narrative would require substantial changes to align character outcomes and plot direction. Given that Chu has never confirmed his films will strictly adhere to the musical, future adaptations could reinterpret the novels for the screen.
In November 2024, Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman confirmed that they are discussing further expansion of the Wicked film universe. However, they stated that any new projects would not be titled Wicked Part Three or Four. The potential for Wicked 3 may depend on how the second film concludes and whether there is audience demand for more stories beyond Elphaba and Glinda.
