The Bear star Abby Elliot talks about getting fired from Saturday Night Live
During a recent interview, the Odd Mom Out actress recalled her experience before her firing from SNL. She even noted that it was ‘the worst that could happen’ to her.
“Every week was a new week, and your happiness would depend on whether you got something on air or not,” Abby Elliott told The Independent. She added, “and if three weeks went by without a sketch, you’d think, ‘Uh-oh, am I going to be fired?’… There was always that looming threat of getting fired. That was the worst that could happen. And then, I kind of did.”
Elliott’s role on the live sketch comedy series saw her impress everyone as a master impersonator. She has done impressions of celebrities such as Rachel Maddow and Angelina Jolie. Despite gaining worldwide recognition for her hilarious work on the show, the actress ultimately decided to leave. She even submitted her resignation letter to SNL boss Lorne Michaels, only to rescind it later.
Abby Elliott also recalled how Michaels still decided to fire her from SNL. She remarked, “I went back to him with my tail between my legs, asking to stay, but after that season, Lorne said, ‘No, I’m going to cut you loose.'” Elliott further reflected that she quit SNL after realizing that she wasn’t cut out for sketch comedy.
Having joined the long-running NBC show in 2008, Abby Elliott quit in 2012, along with Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg. After joining The Bear in 2022, she secured a Golden Globe Award nomination for her role as the Berzatto sister.
