Ghostbusters Rumor Hints at Exciting Future Movie & Series Update

A new rumor suggests that the iconic Ghostbusters series is gearing up for a major expansion. Reports indicate that Sony is developing several new Ghostbusters projects, which may include various film and television formats.

Next Ghostbusters movie from Sony teased by new rumor

Insider MyTimeToShineHello posted on X (formerly Twitter), “A new Ghostbusters movie is in development at Sony + they are planning a trilogy of animated films and multiple seasons of an animated show.” This follows recent activity within the franchise, including the release of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and renewed interest in cross-format storytelling.

Director Gil Kenan confirmed development on the animated Ghostbusters series for Netflix during an interview on A Trip to the Movies with Alex Zane. Kenan said, “It’s very exciting, I just watched an entire presentation for the show. I’ve seen the sets and the environments and I just saw my first glimpse of a world of supernatural characters as realized by our brilliant creative team.” He added, “The work is being done as we speak. It’s in what we call, ‘full development.’ The scripts are being written and art is being created.”

The animated series was first announced in June 2022 as a collaboration between Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation. Kenan is developing it with Jason Reitman. Reitman directed Ghostbusters: Afterlife and co-wrote both Afterlife and Frozen Empire with Kenan. Their work on the live-action films delayed progress on the animated project until recently.

The Ghostbusters franchise began in 1984 with the original supernatural comedy by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. Since then, it has spawned five films and two major animated series: The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters. The franchise also spans a wide range of other media. Each version typically features eccentric characters who capture paranormal threats using custom-built gear and vehicles.

Kenan and Reitman’s continued involvement indicates ongoing development, with multiple animated and live-action projects now reportedly in the pipeline. The Netflix animated series remains in full development, with writing and design work actively underway.
