A new rumor suggests Doctor Who may soon part ways with its current streaming platform. Reports indicate that the BBC is in talks with multiple major streamers to secure a new home for the series, following uncertainty about its future on Disney+.
After Disney+, Doctor Who’s new seasons could end up on Netflix or Max
On June 24, 2025, industry scooper @MyTimeToShineHello posted on X (formerly Twitter) that both “Netflix and HBO Max are both in talks to buy the streaming rights for Doctor Who”. As of now, the BBC has not officially confirmed a new distribution deal.
The update follows reports that Disney+ has ended its partnership with the long-running sci-fi series. According to scooper Daniel Richtman, “Doctor Who is only dead at Disney, but there are active talks to revive it elsewhere, and things are looking promising.” Platforms reportedly involved in talks include Netflix, Max (formerly HBO Max), and Prime Video.
The show’s Disney+ run faced backlash despite the return of showrunner Russell T Davies and an increased production budget. New concepts like “Bi-regeneration” and major shifts in the Doctor’s lore received mixed reactions from fans. The relaunch failed to deliver the expected ratings or critical acclaim.
Actor Ncuti Gatwa, who was introduced as the Doctor, had limited screen time in Season 1 due to other commitments. Billie Piper returned in the Season 2 finale and temporarily assumed the Doctor’s role, which divided the fanbase further. Production canceled the 2025 Christmas special, and no new season is currently in development.
The original deal with Disney+ aimed to boost Doctor Who’s global presence and production value. However, viewership reportedly fell short, prompting the BBC to seek new streaming partners.
A TikTok video citing Richtman’s report also featured a leaked screenshot of an alternate Season 2 ending, which was reportedly confirmed by the mother of the actress who played Poppy.
