The Season 3 finale of Squid Game may lay the groundwork for an upcoming American spin-off developed by David Fincher. Industry insider @MyTimeToShineHello posted on X (formerly Twitter), “The Squid Game S3 finale sets up the American spinoff that David Fincher is developing.” Netflix has not yet confirmed the project.
The finale, premiering June 27, 2025, marks the conclusion of Hwang Dong-hyuk’s original storyline. Season 3 continues Gi-hun’s arc as he reenters the games, now more lethal than before. Netflix released a trailer during its annual Tudum event, showing two key scenes: the Front Man unmasking himself and Gi-hun wearing a tuxedo, suggesting another win.
Hwang Dong-hyuk had previously shared ideas for a spin-off set between Seasons 1 and 2. Speaking to IndieWire, he stated, “If I make [a] spin off, it will be a story happening between Season 1 and 2. There [was] a three years gap between Season 1 and 2. So, I want to show what they did for those times.” Season 2 already explored this gap indirectly, noting Gi-hun gave up plans to travel to the U.S. and instead returned to stop the games.
Hwang is reportedly not involved in the Fincher-led project, but Netflix appears to be expanding the Squid Game universe internationally. While the streaming giant has not officially announced the American version, the Season 3 teaser appears to hint at ongoing development behind the scenes.
The third installment will also introduce a new lineup of players while continuing the show’s focus on survival, manipulation, and power dynamics. The confirmed release date for the final season is June 27, 2025.
