The White Lotus Season 3’s Sam Rockwell Shot His Monologue in One Take

Having arguably delivered the most memorable moment of The White Lotus Season 3, actor Sam Rockwell has come out to explain his now iconic monologue in Episode 5 of the season. Portraying the role of Frank, an old friend of Walton Goggins’ Rick Hatchett, Rockwell goes on an unhinged rant about discovering himself through severely unconventional methods after landing in Thailand. The Academy Award winner has now shed more light on this humorous yet philosophical sequence.

Sam Rockwell opens up about filming his monologue in The White Lotus Season 3

While speaking with Dax Shepard during his recent appearance on his podcast, the Jojo Rabbit actor opened up about his brief but impactful cameo in The White Lotus Season 3, noting how the scene came to be. In his account, he disclosed that despite the complexity of the sequence, he was able to shoot the entire scene in one go.

Describing his influence on Frank’s infamous speech in The White Lotus Season 3 Episode 5, Sam Rockwell stated on the Armchair Expert podcast, “I sort of pitched some things to Mike White, he went for some of it.” The accepted suggestions, made by the 56-year-old actor, included a shaved head, a tattoo, as well as some scars for Frank.

In his five-minute monologue, Rockwell talked about how his character’s sexual and religious escapades led to him gaining a brand new perspective about his identity. And, as confirmed by the veteran thespian, he managed to convey the entire story of Frank in The White Lotus Season 3 in a single take.

“You know, they had an earwig. I said prepare an earwig just in case I get in trouble, and then I didn’t need it. I did it in one take, and then I think we continued to do one-takers and not break it up too much. Mike’s just amazing, you know, he’s like a Paddy Chayefsky kind of writer,” Rockwell noted.
