Crazy Rich Asians 2 Writer Says the Sequel ‘Is Still Going to Happen’

Seven years after the release of the original movie, Crazy Rich Asians 2 has finally received a positive update from its lead writer. Amy Wang, who previously replaced Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim as the official screenwriter for the much-awaited sequel, has come out to confirm that despite the delay, the team behind the Crazy Rich Asians sequel is moving ahead with the project.

Amy Wang confirms Crazy Rich Asians 2 is still in works

In a recent discussion, screenwriter Amy Wang revealed that the Crazy Rich Asians sequel is currently in the pipeline.

While speaking with The Direct during her appearance at the Slanted SXSW premiere, Wang answered queries regarding the status of Crazy Rich Asians 2, as well as its potential release window. Confirming that the franchise’s second installment is still in works, the writer noted, “I am very sorry to disappoint. As far as I know, it is still going to happen, but it’s just that everyone’s taking their time. Everybody wants to make the script perfect and great. And you know, they want the sequel to be better than the past, so, yeah.”

This update comes as a relief for Crazy Rich Asians fans, as details about the sequel have been few and far between until now. Talking about the sequel in an earlier interview, director Jon M. Chu noted that Crazy Rich Asians 2 might not happen for some time. He stated, “I want the best thing. I want it to be worthy of what Crazy Rich Asians 1 was. We’ve tried all different versions,” before adding, “We’ve tried versions, and the fact is, is that we just haven’t gotten there.”

The original 2018 film, helmed by Chu, served as a big-screen adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s 2013 novel of the same name. Aside from Constance Wu and Henry Golding, who appeared as the two main leads, Crazy Rich Asians also featured a stellar supporting cast, which included Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, and Michelle Yeoh, among others.
