The Handmaid Tale’s Max Minghella Addresses [Spoiler]’s Death in Season 6

In the wake of the release of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6’s penultimate episode, actor Max Minghella has come out to share his views on the unexpected death of Commander Nick Blaine. The Teen Spirit star not only opened up about the final moments of his character on the show, inspired by Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name, but also shed light on the trajectory of Nick’s complicated relationship with Elisabeth Moss’ June.

Max Minghella says Nick thinking about June before dying in The Handmaid’s Tale ‘felt very poignant’

In a recent interview, Max Minghella noted that Nick talking about June just moments before his death in the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale was actually “consistent with the character.”

The actor spoke to Variety from a film set in Wales about his character’s demise in the critically acclaimed Hulu series. He shared, “It felt very poignant — and consistent with the character and how he’s functioned in the show. He’s really been driven by that relationship. It also was lovely to finish with Bradley [Whitford], who has become such a dear friend outside the show. That felt right to me, too.”

Commander Nick Blaine’s death occurs in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Episode 9 after he unknowingly boards a flight laced with explosives. Bradley Whitford’s Commander Joseph Lawrence is the one who executes the plot to blow up the Commanders-only plane. However, after Josh Charles’ Commander Wharton invites Joseph on the flight, he forcefully obliges in order to maintain his cover. As such, both Wharton and Lawrence, along with the unsuspecting Nick, end up losing their lives in the chaotic episode.

Max Minghella also talked about the evolution of his character’s relationship with Elisabeth Moss’ June. He said, “The Nick and June relationship has been a reprieve from the more tense thematic elements of the show. And so to ground that relationship, then, into some of the darker, more nihilistic points of view that we have to explore in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ I was surprised by it.”

Having showcased the death of three High Commanders, including Nick, Episode 9 of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 seems to have perfectly set up the stage for the series finale. It will air on Hulu next Tuesday on May 27, 2025.
