In the latest edition of Honest Movie Reviews, we’re pulling together the funniest audience movie reviews on the internet. From funny to ironic, truthful to the downright silly, we’re diving into the deep, dark rabbit hole of online movie fandom. Today, we turn to The Lost City.
In an era where movie stars are becoming a dying breed, there are very few actors these days that can coast solely on star power alone. As it happens, Sandra Bullock is certainly one of those select actors who can open a movie to big numbers no matter the plot or character she’s playing. Bullock has undoubtedly perfected the “everywoman” archetype, but she’s also one of the only female actors left who can attract a four-quadrant audience to movie theaters. Although her output has dropped in recent years, Bullock’s latest film, The Lost City, proves that she remains a box office draw even in a pandemic.
For those who are unaware, the 2022 action-adventure comedy was directed by Aaron and Adam Nee. The story follows a romance novel writer who is captured by an eccentric billionaire (Daniel Radcliffe) in hopes that she can lead him to an ancient lost treasure from her latest story. Determined to prove that the cover model for her stories (Channing Tatum) is a real hero, he sets off to rescue her. Released in March of this year, the film went on to become a critical and commercial success, grossing $181 million at the global box office.
Formerly known as The Lost City of D (a much better title), the film was clearly dumbed down for a PG-13 rating by Paramount. While the movie is still funny — mostly due to the chemistry between the leads — there’s a lot left to be desired. As per usual, the users of Letterboxd.com were on the case, offering their honest opinions on the movie. And as it turns out, The Lost City seems to be a better Uncharted movie than Uncharted.
