Aubrey Plaza addressed her husband Jeff Baena’s tragic death and opened up to Amy Poehler about coping with grief. During her recent appearance on Poehler’s podcast, “Good Hang,” the actor spoke out about overcoming loss after Baena, director and screenwriter, died by suicide earlier this year. The host thoughtfully raised the subject as she asked Plaza how she was really “feeling” while at the same time comforting her.
Aubrey Plaza talks about dealing with grief after husband Jeff Baena’s death
Aubrey Plaza got candid about coping with loss following her husband’s tragic death in the latest episode of Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast. Poehler gently eased into the subject after first bringing up the actor’s dog, Frankie, and then telling her that people want to know how she has been doing. “You’ve had this terrible, terrible, tragic year,” the host said before mentioning the loss of Plaza’s husband, Jeff Baena.
“You’ve been dealing with that and you’ve been looking for all different ways in which to feel and find support,” Poehler told “The White Lotus” star. She then asked her about how she was feeling that day and at that very moment. In response, Plaza immediately responded to her former “Parks and Recreation” co-star’s question, saying that she was really feeling “happy to be with you” right there in that “very present moment.”
While getting honest about coping with her husband’s death, Plaza noted that “overall, I’m here and I’m functioning.” She further expressed feeling “really grateful to be moving through the world.” Despite seeming uncertain, the 41-year-old said that she thinks she’s doing “okay,” but compared dealing with the grief of the huge loss to a “daily struggle.” She then compared her grief to a scene from a movie called “The Gorge.”
Aubrey Plaza and her husband had been married for nearly four years when he tragically died by suicide earlier this year, on January 3. According to the BBC, she and the Baena/Stern family released a statement at the time, calling his demise “an unimaginable tragedy.”
